Rolling Hills Charter School Banking Procedures 2011-2012
Overview:
The banking system is designed to help students learn the fundamental monetary system, providing experiences for students to earn and pay bills to positively and realistically reinforce responsible life skills. Students’ checkbooks have been donated by CapEd, and are designed to emulate a real checkbook. This monetary system, although not real, will allow students to use their money for real items.
Students will be responsible for applying for a job, writing a resume, balancing their checkbooks, paying bills, budgeting for rent and other monthly bills, paying taxes, and performing service-learning through their jobs on a weekly, if not daily, basis. We are looking forward to helping our middle school to feel a sense of ownership and community,
Below are the guidelines for middle school students:
Ways to Earn Money:
Each student will begin their experience with a gift of $100
The following earnings will be based upon the situation:
· Salary/wages for job
· Positive Behavior
· Exemplary work
The following earnings will be consistent for each student:
· Stellar Binder Checks-$25
· Clean Lockers-$25
· Citizen of the Month will receive two free homework passes and a one-time bonus of 50% of their current checking account balance.
Charges/Fees:
Each percentage fee is based upon the student’s current balance at the time the charge is incurred.
· Missing Homework: Homework that is not turned in at the time that it is due, is considered missing. Students will be charged 20% for the first missing assignment in one week. They will then have the opportunity to hand in their work the following day only, if they would like to receive late credit (50%) of their score earned. The second missing assignment in one week will result in a visit with Dr. Montgomery and a 40% charge. This includes all special classes, along with core classes.
· Rental Equipment: Students will be able to rent pencils, white board markers, erasers and correcting pens, but must return them at the end of the class period. A 10% fee will be required with each rental, and students will submit their ID card, along with their check when renting the item. ID cards will be returned when item is returned in good condition. There will be a $10 replacement fee for each item not returned, or returned in poor condition.
· Missing ID Card: If a student loses their ID card they will be charged a $50 replacement fee, and will need to use their own time to create a new card to be signed and approved by a middle school teacher.
· Minimum Balance: Students must keep a minimum of $25 in their checking account at all times. For each increment of $5 that the student goes below the $25 minimum, students will be required to get a part-time job during their lunch recess to work their way back to the minimum balance required.
· Bad Checks: If students write a check incorrectly there will be a $25 fee. This includes writing checks with pen, filling out the memo along with all other parts of the check correctly.
· Poor Attitude/Behavior: The charge for this will depend upon the infraction, not to exceed 50% of a student’s balance.
· Property Damage: Any property of the school that is damaged or left a mess will incur a fee, depending upon the amount of damage or mess that is created.
Ways to Spend Money Earned:
· Work Pass: Students may purchase one free homework pass per quarter for 40% of their balance. This may not be used on a test, quiz, project or presentation.
· Paid Vacation: Students may pay for time to chill out. This must be approved and scheduled in advance. Each 20 minute segment of time will cost 40% of their balance. Students may not take vacation time during tests, quizzes, etc., and may not schedule more than one vacation segment per two-week period.
· Store: A middle school store will be available for students to purchase items that teachers provide. If students would like to contribute items to the store, they may do so and will earn 10% of the purchase price.
· Free Dress Day: Students may purchase a free dress day for 40% of their balance, not to exceed one free dress day per two-week period.
The purpose for setting these procedures in place is to help our students experience real life experiences in a unique and engaging manner, while helping to instill in them self-respect, sense of community and responsibility.
